Horology is the art of making clocks, watches and other devices for telling time and it is also the study/science of measuring time. An effort has been made to measure time since man appeared on earth. Since their first introduction, watches have been marketed as a necessity, a trendy accessory in a variety of designs and colors. After the modern inexpensive production of miniaturized watch mechanisms, wristwatches became widely accessible in the twentieth century. Contemporary watches have another important feature like they represent the culture apart from displaying time, dates, days, months, and year information.

People were used to carry pocket watches, which had covers and were placed into a pocket and attached with a light chain from a belt or pin before wrist watch came in to exist. But today watches are purchased and widely used due to their stylistic time device, inexpensive, medium-priced or expensive collectible watches. According to history from the horology world the pocket watch as the first watch was introduced many years back.  Today old ones are considered to be collectible items, for only this people are certainly anxious to buy them in jewelry stores or search for them in flee markets. Still people are believed that old is always gold.

Patek Philippe was the first person who invented the first wristwatch at the end of 19th century. However it was considered to be a woman's accessory at that time. Then the revolution started by Louis Cartier. He created one wristwatch especially for his Brazilian friend-Alberto Santos-Dumont, who had trouble checking the time while working on his aircraft invention from this end men begun wearing wristwatches. Parisian male consumer became interested in Cartier's idea of this new portable time device that Cartier gave the leather-band wristwatch to Dumont.

However after the end of the World Wars the popularity of the wristwatch became possible. Many military officers kept their wristwatches and introduced them to the Western culture as a very useful and quick device to check time. The idea of wearing this time accessory became popular because one could frequently and quickly glance the time while wearing a wristwatch in comparison to the older time-consuming version of pocket watch.

There are new forms of wristwatches available today with the self-winding, kinetic, electronic, light-powered or thermal power to check time conveniently. The basic difference between these different types of watches is the way each watch receives the necessary amount of energy in order to continue its operation. However wristwatches can display time in several ways like analog or digital.

Anyhow it depends upon the person that what type of watch is going to preferred by him/her. It may be with a numbered dial upon which a rotating hour and longer minute rotating hand operate, or through a digital display that shows time as a number. However the newer analog form did not replace the widely used analog watches because cheaper electronics permitted the popularization of digital watches. Since different types of watches serve different types of people during their everyday tasks, people use both simple and complicated watch types.
